Shoulder Pain

Pain in your shoulder can be caused by several factors. Repetitive stress injuries are very common in this area, usually caused by a lifetime of heavy labor. It's also possible to stress this area of the body with a single gym workout or automobile accident. In fact, many people who suffer from whiplash also complain about shoulder pain. We at Heritage Clinic of Chiropractic in Delaware, OH, know a lot about shoulder pain and chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Care for Shoulder Pain

The shoulders are an area of the body that contain several large muscles. If these muscles become inflamed as a result of stress or injury, they can easily start to affect the nerves connected to them. Fortunately, chiropractic care is a good way to help deal with this type of pain.

During your first visit with chiropractor at our practice for shoulder pain, you will be asked a lot of questions about the circumstances that led up to the injury in this area.  This information, combined with measurements that a chiropractor on our team might take, will allow our chiropractor to identify which muscles are injured and formulate a plan to correct the problem.

Every patient is different, and that means that every treatment for whiplash may be slightly different. However, there are a few elements that tend to be similar across nearly all whiplash treatments.

A chiropractor at our practice will usually start a treatment session by manipulating the muscles in the upper back, neck, and shoulder. The exact type of manipulations will be dependent on the type and severity of your injury. During the first few sessions it is common for our chiropractor to move the muscles around the injured site. This ensures that injured muscles are not moved too quickly and gives the injured muscles room to move.

Typically, patients may experience some pain relief after the very first session. In more severe cases, this might not be total relief, but rather just a decrease in the overall level of pain.  In many cases, muscles in the shoulder will try to move back to their unnatural positions (this is particularly true if the shoulder has been in pain for a long period of time). As this happens, the pain may come back. The solution to this is to schedule multiple early appointments very close to each other; sometimes up to two a week. Frequent movement of the muscles will help train them to stay in their proper positions. Over time, this means that there may be less pain for longer periods of time.
